What are wheelchair skills?

Moving around using a wheelchair can feel like you are constantly facing barriers stopping you getting places.

Having the skills to use any new piece of equipment is essential and wheelchairs are no different.

Learning wheelchair skills and having the confidence to use them in your daily life will allow you to gain independence and do more things you want to.

Wheelchair skills can be tailored to what you want to learn and can include:

  • Pushing forwards and backwards

  • Turning

  • One-handed pushing

  • Wheelchair maintenance

  • Back wheel balance (wheelie)

  • Ramps

  • Kerbs

  • Steps
